Linking Agroforestry to Sustainable Agriculture

ICRAF has been afforded a great opportunity to link in agroforestry (and CGIAR work in general) more to the growing field of sustainable agriculture. It is also an opportunity to strengthen the social science focus in our work as requested by our Board.

Wearing an ICRAF hat, DDG ICRAF - Dr. Tony Simons has been invited to be an Editor of the Thomson rated International Journal of Sustainable Agriculture – a quarterly publication.

Tony invites you to check out the journal and internet accessible articles from it by clicking here.

Specifically, The International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability (IJAS) is a cross-disciplinary, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing the understanding of sustainability in agricultural and food systems.

IJAS publishes both theoretical developments and critical appraisals of new evidence on what is not sustainable about current or past agricultural and food systems, as well as on transitions towards agricultural and rural sustainability at farm, community, regional, national and international levels, and through food supply chains. It is committed to clear and consistent use of language and logic, and the use of appropriate evidence to substantiate empirical statements.
IJAS increases knowledge on what technologies and processes are contributing to agricultural sustainability, what policies, institutions and economic structures are preventing or promoting sustainability, and what relevant lessons should be learned.

Topics covered include:
Agriculture - Environment Interactions
Agriculture and Rural Economy Interactions
Institutional and Policy Issues
Technology Development
Food and Consumer Issues

Landcare: local action-global progress
The Landcare movement is growing exponentially and its history matters. For this reason, this new book has been drafted, in true Landcare form, by many hands. It brings together story after story, how landcare is emerging in different geographical and cultural contexts—what has worked and what has not. The book provides insights into the nuts and bolts of the different experiences, how they came together and what the next steps may be. It is a snapshot in time but one that will serve as a resource to those who are going to take landcare forward in their own communities, countries and regions.

Invitation to attend the Electronic Records Management Capacity Course: “Managing the transition in Records Management” 6th - 8th May 2009, eDevelopment House, Nairobi, Kenya.

Organization and every individual has records! Business offices, government agencies, non-profit groups, educational institutions, and medical facilities-just to name a few-must deal with enormous amounts of records on a daily basis. Records must be managed from the time they are created or received, through distribution, use, and maintenance, until they are finally destroyed or permanently archived. Well managed records are essential if government and organisations are to function effectively, develop and implement policy, plan and take decisions regardless of the media on which the record is stored, the record must be properly managed to be an asset to the organization.

It is from this background that AeRC is hosting a three-day (6-8 May 2009) capacity building workshop on Electronic Records Management in Nairobi, Kenya to bring information managers to speed with this very powerful process. The workshop will provide participants with both a theoretical and practical understanding of the key concepts of Electronic Records Management. This Records Management course will give a basic overview of records management terminology, concepts, and procedures to successfully manage records in today's offices. Mainstreaming Climate Change into Agricultural Education: Challenges and Perspectives

Climate change is adversely affecting practically all economic sectors. Africa is projected to have a future associated with scarce water, declining agricultural yields, encroaching desert and damaged coastal infrastructure. With graduating students from tertiary agriculture and natural resource management institutions expected to provide solutions to development challenges, it is unfortunate that climate change has not been integrated into the curricula to any meaningful extent. Consequently graduating students are ill-equipped to advise meaningfully on the challenges posed by climate change.

This working paper is an outcome of a symposium organized to share information on climate change challenges for agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa; explore methods of mainstreaming climate change knowledge into agricultural education; and identify recommendations on effective policies, institutions and capacity. The brief lays down the key issues in climate change: who is affected and what direction we are taking if the negative effects presented by climate change are not checked. It presents a compelling argument on the role of tertiary education in making meaningful contributions and goes further to present an action plan to ensure that climate change is integrated into the curricula of tertiary agriculture and natural resource management institutions including the key components of such a curricula.
